A Letter from Carley
I was 18 years old when I received the phone call. My brother, at the age of 12, was removed from our home. My sweet brother, Jacob, who is autistic and nonverbal. My happy-go-lucky brother, the ray of sunshine in our lives who can’t dress himself, use the bathroom, wash his hands on his own, or tie his shoes was removed from our home.
My family was heartbroken. And we were scared.
Who would understand Jacob? How will they treat him? Will he be forgotten? Will he know that he is loved? These are the questions that raced through our minds and shattered our hearts.
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged,
for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. // Joshua 1:9
During that first visit we saw the incredible care and love he was receiving. And Jake was making progress. We witnessed that Jake was not a client in Wedgwood’s care, but he gained a second family. We were not scared anymore. We knew that our sweet Jake would not be forgotten at Wedgwood and that he was very much loved and provided for at this special place.
Wedgwood didn’t forget that Jake had a family either. They Facetimed with us every single night allowing us to stay connected. Wedgwood always treated Jake and our family with dignity and respect.
Today we are told that Jake is the most well-equipped adult with autism. He is independent. He can use the bathroom, wash his own hands, and communicate to say he is hungry, tired, or has another need.
Our family experienced the words of Joshua 1:9. Wedgwood created a brave space for Jake to grow into the young man he is today. And they created a brave space for our family to not be afraid. God was with Jake at Wedgwood and He was with us as we loved Jake from afar.
Wedgwood did more than just provide good care; they provided loving care for Jake. The staff at Wedgwood are amazing. This work can’t be done by just anyone – it requires truly special people – people who commit their life to providing God’s children with exceptional, compassionate, dignified care.
Every county should have a Wedgwood – so many children and families would have a better future.
With all of our hearts, we are so grateful for Wedgwood Christian Services, the exceptional care they gave to our dear Jake, and for becoming part of our family. Thank you for your role in Jake’s life. Because of caring people like you who give generously and advocate fiercely, Wedgwood exists for families like ours.
“You may not be able to change the world, but you can change the world for one person.” Or in our case, one family. Thank you for being part of our lives and making our world better.
There are many more families in West Michigan like ours that desperately need the expertise and support of Wedgwood. Your donation this spring means that a heartbroken family – precious children of God – can access life-changing treatment, and a space to bravely face challenges and discover hope and healing. Knowing what Wedgwood has done for our family, I can honestly tell you that your gift today truly changes lives for the better.
With heartfelt thanks,
Carley, Jake’s sister
